This photo of the location of the jeep accident 8/1/68 is courtesy of Doc Wean; the jeep Lt. Hopkins was riding in went down this trail to cross this small creek. The Marine Second Lieutenant asked to accompany Doyle and Ogden on the payroll run...life goes on even during a war and Marines had bills to pay, mail to pickup and C rations to replenish. But the trip turned deadly as the explosive device was detonated under the right tire; Lt. Hopkins had asked to switch seats with Cpl Doyle and he was the Marine to take the critical hit |

This photo of a KIA Jeep was taken around December 9-10, 1968 by Sp. 4 Rob Wilson, Gun 2, A Battery, 8/4 Army Artillery from a moving vehicle. Rob was with a 175MM self propelled cannon unit and traveled Hwy 9 once a week. According to witnesses of Hopkins' accident in August, the appearance of the Jeep in the photo is very similar to the condition of the Jeep that was damaged when an NVA detonated an explosive device that killed Lt. Hopkins. Capt. Sullivan, Dave's CO recalled that Dave's Jeep was on a different road, never recovered, and stripped of the tires by locals.
