Marines and Camp Carroll

William James Doyle posing with his family the day he left for Vietnam; newbies must have really stuck out when they arrived in country
When Dave Hopkins arrived in Camp Carroll he was greeted by Doc Wean; later to meet Bill Doyle pictured here; as the photo tells us, Camp Carroll required some adjustments to a more casual appearance; just like medieval knights for the call out of their men they arrived in camp with banners and flourish; soon to relinquish their velvets and taffeta for the comfort of loose surcotes of silk ( to prevent infection) to underline their hauberks of cour boulli or mail; fighting their battles in the rains that defined Scottish weather, slogging their way through the mud of gills and bogs that dominated the countryside...and they never wore underwear

Here Doug 'Doc' Wean dines on that culinary delight...C Rations...at Rockpile in September 1968
Doc Wean provided this photo of the XO Bob Barsness; Lt. Hopkins took his place for the payroll run that fateful day
